Yammer is a social networking application similar to Facebook. However, Yammer is different in that it is solely geared to work within an organization. Yammers tagline is; “The Enterprise Social Network”. It is a private social network for your company. Employees can now collaborate real-time in a secure environment across departments or across the world.
In June of 2012, Microsoft purchased Yammer for $1.2 Billion dollars in cash!
The plan was to integrate Yammmer with SharePoint.
- Basic Integration - This summer Microsoft will update the Office 365 service and allow customers to replace the SharePoint newsfeed with Yammer.
- Deeper Connections - This fall they will deliver another update to Office 365 and deepen the integration. Customers will still have the option of choosing between Yammer and the SharePoint newsfeed, but this new, integrated Yammer experience will offer Single Sign-On (SSO) and seamless navigation.
- Connected Experiences – Starting in 2014, there will be new social enhancements roughly every 90 days. Over time these incremental enhancements will combine social, collaboration, email, instant messaging, voice, video, and line of business applications in innovative new ways.
There are a number of apps for or integrate with Yammer. See a list
