2. Attempt “Checking in” in this
order:
1. Open the schedule in Microsoft Project. If it opens
“Read/Write”; Save, Close and Check in
2. Perhaps you tried to open it too quickly after just
closing. Wait 60 seconds and try opening again
3. Ensure it is not in “Edit Mode” within the PWA
Project Details page
4. Check in your project through Project Center
5. Clear your Cache
6. Contact Project Server Administrator

When attempting to reopen a project schedule, you may see a
notification message like this:
This message would appear when you attempt to open the
project schedule too quickly after closing it. Although YOU
may have completed the Saving and Closing steps correctly
from within Microsoft Project, there are still some process
that need to occur on the Server.
Simply wait about 60 seconds and then open the schedule. 4

From Project
Center, click on the
hyperlink name of
the project to drill
into the project.
Click on the Project
tab. If the fields are
showing as editable,
click on the red
“Close” button
within the ribbon.

Select the project that is “stuck” checked out by placing a
check in the box.

Sometimes a project schedule gets
“stuck” checked out due to the cache of
Microsoft Project
If the project schedule is not in the list
of projects to force check in via Project
Center, and you are still getting a
message that the project is checked
out, then you should clear the cache of
Microsoft Project

>Save, >Clean

Select the project from
the list
Click on Remove From
Cache
The project schedule
should now open
correctly.
If not, contact your
system administrator.

Remember: Whether you simply Save or if you Publish,
you must watch for the processing to complete.

Closing a project schedule
When closing a project
schedule, you should
always:
Click on >File, >Close
(or use shortcuts in your
Quick Access Toolbar)
Select Save , and
Check in
Click on OK
Tip: Wait about 5
seconds before exiting
out of Microsoft Project
altogether
